  1. 1887-1985. Russian-born French painter and
  2. designer; much of his highly coloured,
  3. fantastic imagery was inspired by the village
  4. life of his boyhood. He also designed stained
  5. glass, mosaics (for Israel's Knesset in the
  6. 1960s), tapestries, and stage sets. Chagall
  7. is an original figure, often seen as a
  8. precursor of Surrealism, as in The Dream
  9. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). He
  10. lived mainly in France from 1922. His stained
  11. glass can be found in, notably, a chapel in
  12. Venice, the south of France, 1950s, and a
  13. synagogue near Jerusalem. He also produced
  14. illustrated books.
